Properties of mixed colloidal crystals
2007
We prepared colloidal crystals from aqueous suspensions of spherical, charged polystyrene spheres under deionised conditions. Using a home-built multipurpose light scattering apparatus we measured the static structure factor, the static shear modulus and the intermediate scattering function. In addition we also monitored also the conductivity as a function of the composition and the particle number density. For the mixture investigated the data are well described assuming the formation of randomly substituted body-centered-cubic crystals.
Fast microscopic method for large scale determination of structure, morphology, and quality of thin colloidal crystals.
2006
We present a novel fast microscopic method to analyze the crystal structures of air-dried or suspended colloidal multilayer systems. Once typical lattice spacings of such films are in the range of visible light, characteristic Bragg scattering patterns are observed. If in microscopic observations these are excluded from image construction, a unique color coding for regions of different structures, morphologies, and layer numbers results. Incoherently scattering defect structures, however, may not be excluded from image construction and thus remain visible with high resolution.
Crystallization of hard-sphere colloids -- deviations from classical nucleation theory
2006
The creation of three-dimensional ordered colloidal crystals, for application in a range of nanotechnologies, has been a goal for many researchers in the past few years. The main difficulty in creating macroscopic sized crystals of densely packed colloidal particles is that colloidal particles always have a range of particle sizes - ie, they are polydisperse. This paper studied the crystallization kinetics of a hard-sphere colloid with a well defined Gaussian polydispersity. The authors find that crystallization occurs in two stages, and does not follow the simple classical nucleation picture. The paper discusses the implications of these results for research into colloidal crystals as poss…
Construction and stability of a close-packed structure observed in thin colloidal crystals
2007
We have characterized a close-packed structure of confined charged colloidal spheres, which has been recently discovered. Using different microscopy experiments, the vertically arranged hexagonal planes of n - hcp perpendicular are found to continuously evolve from the horizontally oriented stacks of n hexagonal planes (nDelta) following the maximum packing criterion, but discontinuously transform to a stack of n+1 square planes [(n+1)[SHAPE OF A SQUARE]]. Large mechanically stable domains with threefold twin structures are regularly observed in the suspended state at packing fractions between 0.4 and 0.58.
Investigation of Finite-Size Effects in the Determination of Interfacial Tensions
2014
The interfacial tension between coexisting phases of a material is an important parameter in the description of many phenomena such as crystallization, and even today its accurate measurement remains difficult. We have studied logarithmic finite-size corrections in the determination of the interfacial tension with large scale Monte Carlo simulations, and have identified several novel contributions which not only depend on the ensemble, but also on the type of the applied boundary conditions. We present results for the Lennard-Jones system and the Ising model, as well as for hard spheres, which are particularly challenging. In the future, these findings will contribute to the understanding a…
The Observation of Formation and Annihilation of Solitons and Standing Strain Wave Superstructures in a Two-Dimensional Colloidal Crystal
2008
Confining a colloidal crystal within a long narrow channel produced by two parallel walls can be used to impose a meso-scale superstructure of a predominantly mechanical elastic character [Chui et al., EPL 2008, 83, 58004]. When the crystal is compressed in the direction perpendicular to the walls, we obtain a structural transition when the number of rows of particles parallel to the walls decreases by one. All the particles of this vanishing row are distributed throughout the crystal. If the confining walls are structured (say with a corrugation along the length of the walls), then these extra particles are distributed neither uniformly nor randomly; rather, defect structures are created a…
Exotic crystal superstructures of colloidal crystals in confinement.
2008
Colloidal model systems have been used for over three decades for investigating liquids, crystals, and glasses. Colloidal crystal superstructures have been observed in binary systems of repulsive spheres as well as oppositely charged sphere systems showing structures well known from atomic solids. In this work we study the structural transition of colloidal crystals under confinement. In addition to the known sequence of crystalline structures, crystal superstructures with dodecagonal and hexagonal symmetry are observed in one component systems. These structures have no atomic counterpart.
Direct observation of a buckling transition during the formation of thin colloidal crystals
2007
We have investigated a colloidal suspension in a thin wedge formed by two glass plates in the presence of a lateral pressure. Starting with a single hexagonal layer, with increasing separation between the glass plates additional layers are added. This process is accompanied by a number of structural transitions necessary to maintain a high packing fraction under the given boundary conditions. Besides the well-known sequence of hexagonal and quadratic phases, we observe two new phases which are identified with the buckling and the rhombic phase recently predicted by other authors.
Consistence of the Mean Field Description of Charged Colloidal Crystal Properties
2006
The Debye-Huckel-Potential in combination with an effective or renormalized charge is a widely and often successfully used concept to describe the interaction in charged colloidal model systems and the resulting suspension properties. In particular the phase behaviour can be described in dependence of the parameters particle number density, salt concentration and effective charge. We performed simultaneous measurements of the phase behaviour, the shear modulus and the low frequency conductivity of deionised aqueous suspensions of highly charged colloidal spheres. From the shear modulus the interaction potential at the nearest neighbour distance in terms of a Debye-Huckel potential can be de…
Colloidal layers in magnetic fields and under shear flow
2005
The behaviour of colloidal mono- and bilayers in external magnetic fields and under shear is discussed and recent progress is summarized. Superparamagnetic colloidal particles form monolayers when they are confined to a air–water interface in a hanging water droplet. An external magnetic field allows us to tune the strength of the mutual dipole–dipole interaction between the colloids and the anisotropy of the interaction can be controlled by the tilt angle of the magnetic field relative to the surface normal of the air–water interface. For sufficiently large magnetic field strength crystalline monolayers are found. The role of fluctuations in these two-dimensional crystals is discussed. Fur…
